Design Inspiration
The design on this cushion is inspired by the ‘ngalawa’ which is a traditional fishing boat originating from the Tanzanian islands of Tumbatu and Unguja and later adopted for use in north-eastern Pemba, Tumbe and Msuka and are now common around the coast. Ngalawas are made of wood, primarily from the mango tree, are usually 5 to 6 metres long with two outriggers to stabilise the boat during sailing and have a single sail as below:
People from the north and south of Pemba Island use ngalawas for line fishing to catch tuna, king fish, red snappers and dorado. There are typically 3 to 4 people on a boat at one time and they are usually from the same village, and sometimes a single family. The design on this cushion features a solitary fisherman in a ngalawa… leaving room for you to imagine where he is heading… and perhaps what he’s thinking!
